KOHELET FINANCIAL HEALTH

Dear Kohelet Friend,

As we begin 2019 and our upcoming fiscal year, I want to share with you my vision for Kohelet’s financial health and enlist your support to ensure that we can continue on an even keel.

2018 was an extraordinary year in terms of our expenses, which included both security issues and building maintenance.

Recommended security expenditures included an automated locking door, an electronic viewer, exterior lighting, and video surveillance.  I am sure you agree that these expenditures were necessary in light of recent tragic events.

On the building maintenance front, we need to address painting, appliance replacement, and other items.

Whether you are a weekly attendee at Shabbat services, or perhaps attend periodically over the course of the year or mostly on High Holidays, we call on you to help out with these expenses by making a  financial donation to Kohelet.

As you consider your donation, please know that we have taken steps to reduce our expenses in several ways. We have reduced our insurance premium and telecommunication fees.  A very dedicated core of members personally devotes their time, expertise, and own funds to handle plumbing, electrical, and appliance repairs, roof and gutter maintenance, heating and air conditioning upkeep, and other periodic improvements, saving Kohelet significant funds.  Moreover, we continually strive to cover expenses for holidays and events out of revenue.

Please make a contribution to Kohelet to help keep us financially sound and allow us to continue to provide the community, spiritual support and enrichment  that is central to all of our members lives.  Contributions may be made via our website at kohelet.org (please earmark as “Additional Contribution”).

Thank you very much in advance.  Please contact me confidentially at  jebarach@yahoo.com with any concerns or questions.

With deep appreciation and best wishes,

Joel
Kohelet Co-President

ANNUAL KOHELET MEETING RECAP

Sunday evening’s  Annual Kohelet Meeting was a blockbuster! Filled with enthusiasm, commitment, information, and insights, it might go down in our annals as one of the very best Annual Meetings ever.  The general theme seemed to be gratitude for work done (Board leadership, house maintenance, service leadership) and agreement that everyone would try to attend Shabbat morning services as regularly as possible.  Jonathan Blaine and Jeff Zhuk will join the Board which will be led by Dan Savin and Misty Davidson.  Many new ideas were floated for the coming year so please keep a lookout for them. If your idea—or a new one—wasn’t discussed at the Meeting, please use this Newsletter to begin a forum to consider it.

The congregation seemed notably strong, and Debra Flitter closed the meeting on that note.  We look forward to continued energy and full participation, when possible, at services, holiday observance, chores, and planning.  Online signups will be operational by next week.

ENGEL STATEMENT ON REP. OMAR'S COMMENTS

Anti-Semitism is sadly a very current issue not only abroad but also in the American backyard. This week the Chairperson of the Congressional Foreign Relations Committee made this statement in response to another Congressperson’s remarks:

Representative Eliot Engel Statement on Representative Omar’s Comments, 2-11-2019

“Anti-Semitism in any form is unacceptable, and it’s shocking to hear a Member of Congress invoke the anti-Semitic trope of ‘Jewish money.’ I fully expect that when we disagree on the Foreign Affairs Committee, we will debate policy on the merits and never question members’ motives or resort to personal attacks.  Criticism of American policy toward any country is fair game, but this must be done on policy grounds.

“As I have said, as Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, I will ensure support for Israel remains strong and bipartisan and I will shine a light on the evil of anti-Semitism and the danger it poses. I will make the case to Members on both side of the aisle that our alliance and friendship with Israel are important to our countries’ shared interests, security, and values. This has always been the basis of the U.S.-Israel relationship, and it’s the reason why members on both sides have been strong supporters of that relationship.”
